The Local Climate
The decision in selecting Eden Valley to grow olives was largely due to its local climate conditions, with warm dry summers and cold frosty winters, making it ideal for the trees. This ideal climate, which has a good variance in the seasons, is needed to allow the olive trees to clearly distinguish between their growth cycles and react accordingly, (ie. with bloom, fruit set, dormancy etc).
Temperatures
The summer can be very hot with its long dry days and winter can be very cool with frosty mornings and cold nights, but the best time at the grove is spring or autumn with absolutely beautiful warm clear days and perfect nights! Although there’s a considerable variance in temperatures throughout the year the seasons themselves are usually very consistent with their average temperatures and weather patterns.
Rainfall
The average annual local rainfall for the area is 600mm. This makes it ideal for growing dry land olives, (no irrigation), in this area. But with recent changing weather patterns and extreme conditions, (El Nino), it has made it harder on the trees and calls for a more controlled environment.
